About

Jennifer Hooper is a Margate based visual artist, she studied painting at Camberwell College of Art, drawing at The Royal Drawing School, and anatomy at UCL.

Engaging in a dialogue with the romantic era and nineteenth century naturalism, Hooper’s careful observations imbue her subjects with a fragility and strength, exploring a tenuousness between beauty and melancholy, darkness and light.

Working in watercolour, Inks and oil paint Hooper renders fine detail, intense colour and dramatic tonal variations, where an atmosphere of stillness is created.

Hooper has worked with NGOs and conservationists on international projects (for example Bolivia, Mexico, and Guatemala), highlighting and responding to environmental concerns. Extensive Independent travel has led to a further engagement with ecology and the tradition of natural history exploration. She has exhibited internationally and her work is part of numerous private collections.

'Taking inspiration from nature, I carefully observe relationships between opposites. Often the animal or the animal encounter is a starting point.'
